Rediscover Singapore - The Marina Barrage
The Marina Barrage is a dam built with the confluence of 5 rivers across the Marine Channel between Marine East and South. The purpose of the dam is to be able to be self-sufficient for our water needs when our water agreements with our neighbour Malaysia expires. It was first conceptualised in 1987 by our late Lee Kuan Yew and construction of the barrage started in 2005, turning the Kallang Basin and Marina Bay into a new downtown freshwater reservoir to provide water supply, flood control and a new lifestyle attraction which required the relocation of Clifford Pier to Marine South Pier. The construction took 3 years and was officially open in October 2008 which is also our 15th reservoir and the 1st in the city.
