Holy Family Church

When one mentioned Katong is mean foods and foods but to me growing up in these areas during the 50s and 60s where the Babas and Nyonya are known as Peranakan living amidst those pre-war houses with the beautiful facade, up till today they still draw a lot of admirers to those building among them are mostly photographers and tourist. Along East Coast Road is a church known as the Katong Catholic Church or Holy Family Church. It has its beginning in early 1900, started as a small chapel which was eventually demolished in 1931 while waiting for the new church masses was conducted in the nearby Roxy Theatre finally the church was completed 1932 due to the increase of catholic living in this area the church went through many renovations, in the end, the church had to be demolished again to make way for the new four-storey building with many amenities which finally completed in 1997.

Fook Tet Soo Temple

Fook Tet Soo temple is a Khek temple located around the former Palmer Road bus terminal and was built in the late 1800s when the Hakkas community who arrived erected a shrine to the deity Tua Pek Gong and it is considered the oldest temple in Singapore since the arrival of Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819. As it is facing the sea at that time it was also known as Wang Hai Tua Pek Gong Miao, the said temple characteristic closely resemble Teochew architectural from South China, Today the temple still attract devotees especially the birthday of the deities  Tua Pek Gong and Tai Shang Lao Chun their birthday which falls on the 16th day of the second month and the 1st day of the seven months although the entrance is been barricade to facilitate the construction of the  MRT station and with the completion of the new bus interchange.

Singapore Harbour Board

In a couple years time in the future, the scene will not be the same anymore, the Singapore Habour Board now known as Port of Singapore Authority will cease to exist in this location in its place will be the Southern Waterfront as a vision by the Singapore Government. I started my working life as a tally clerk with a local freight forwarding company and it lasts me 33 years from the start until  I was retrenched in 2003, it been sad for me because after my retrenchment my mum left us which dealt me a double blow for me. After work I would help out at my mother hawker stall during the night along Dunman Road and then in 1972 moved into Dunman Hawker Centre. For the Port, it will be moving to a Mega Port in Tuas. Along Keppel Road opposite the Tanjong Pagar Gate, 1 is the Custom Operation Command, in 2019 it was relocated to the western part of Singapore then the Keppel MRT station will emerge from the Old Railway Station in 2025.

Old Serangoon Road Fire Station

The Serangoon Fire station was built in 1952, it was situated at Serangoon Road near to the Kallang River and was awarded the best fire station in 1996. When it ceased operation in 2001, the responsibilities were transferred to the Bishan Fire Station now you can just admire the building as you drove by along the vicinity.

Clans Association in Singapore (新加坡华人宗乡之情)

 Located in the heart of the present red-light district of Geylang at No:  1, Lorong Bachok, is a piece of a historical building with the Peranakan architecture is a clan association call Kang Ha Peng Sim Kok with the pinyin name of JiangxiaPingxinge one of the many clans association ones could find in Singapore. with the relation to the Chinese surname and the individual ethnic group found here such as the Tan, Teo, Ng, Ong, so on and so forth. and been governed by the Singapore Federation of Chinese Association. They played an active role in their respective ethnic group to promote the Chinese language, values and tradition to support educational, cultural activities and enhance social cohesion and harmony among all races and new immigrants in Singapore.

A Chinese Villa in Little India

Little India is an enclave for the Indian Community to congregate during their Festivals such as Deepavali, Pongal Harvest Festival, besides there  a couple of Indian Temples, Mosques and a Chinese Villa situated at Kerbau Road. The building was built in 1900 and own by a Chinese towkay Tan Teng Niah it is the last known Chinese Villa in the vicinity. Tan Teng Niah is the owner of confectionery factories and rubber smokehouse down in Serangoon Road and the villa said to have eight rooms specially built for his wife.

National Gallery Singapore

The National Gallery of Singapore is an art museum that consists of two national monuments one is the former Supreme Court and the other is our City Hall, one serve as court offices and courthouse and the other is our Municipal Building and is holds many interesting events where the Japanese surrender to the allied forces in 1945. It also serves as the office of the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew our very first Prime Minister. Both buildings are neoclassical of British architecture it was later gazetted as a national monument in 1992.
